Gum disease and your heart: what a new study found
A bacterium behind gum disease may also help drive a common, serious heart valve condition — new research explains the link.
Most people think of gum disease as something that stays in the mouth. A growing body of research says otherwise, and a study presented this year adds a specific bacterium and a specific heart condition to that picture.
Gum disease has already been linked to a wider range of conditions than most patients expect, from diabetes to dementia. Cardiovascular disease has long been part of that list too, but the exact biological mechanism behind the link has mostly stayed unclear. This new research is one of the more direct attempts yet to explain how bacteria in the mouth might reach — and damage — a specific part of the heart.
What the study found
Researchers presented findings at the American Heart Association's Basic Cardiovascular Sciences Scientific Sessions in July 2026, focused on Porphyromonas gingivalis — one of the bacteria most strongly associated with gum inflammation. In animal studies, repeated exposure to the bacterium led it to build up in the aortic valve, increase calcium deposits there, and produce signs of aortic valve narrowing. Preventive antibiotic treatment reduced these effects, which points to the bacterium itself playing a direct role, not just general inflammation in the body.
What calcific aortic valve stenosis actually is
Calcific aortic valve stenosis is a thickening and hardening of the aortic valve that restricts blood flow out of the heart. It's the most common heart valve disease in adults, and it's often silent for years before symptoms appear. As it progresses, it can cause fatigue, chest pain, breathlessness, fainting and eventually heart failure. There's currently no medication proven to prevent or slow it, which is part of why a modifiable risk factor like gum health is of real interest to researchers.

Regular hygienist visits, along with twice-daily brushing and daily flossing, catch gum disease at the stage where it's straightforward to treat — long before it has the chance to become anything more serious.
